Lithuanian Independence Day Celebration in Zagreb Highlight Support for Ukraine

A reception was held in Zagreb on 10 March to mark the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuanian independence. Dr Željko Reiner, Deputy Speaker of the Croatian Parliament, addressed the event. The reception was attended by diplomats residing in Zagreb, representatives of Croatian institutions, members of the Lithuanian community and friends of Lithuania.

The Ambassador of Lithuania to Croatia, Eduardas Borisovas, greeted the participants and stressed the importance of the country's path to freedom and expressed Lithuania's support for Ukraine.

“The road to regaining independence led through years of armed resistance, mass deportations, and the repressions of freedom and conscience fighters. After 50 years of Soviet occupation, it seemed that the dawn of freedom would never come, but the soviet empire collapsed like a house of cards. 35 years ago, on March 11, 1990, Lithuania restored its independence. This is a special day in the history of Lithuania”, said Borisovas.

The Ambassador noted that Lithuania, understanding the importance of freedom and independence, firmly supports Ukraine.

"We firmly stand that the state of Ukraine, its territory and people are not an object of negotiations and exchanges. There can be no discussions about Ukraine without Ukraine and about Europe without Europe", said Borisovas.

He also noted that Lithuania and Croatia agree on the most important political issues of today's turbulent political climate and seek active cooperation in both political and economic spheres. The Ambassador highlighted Lithuania's economic achievements and invited Croatian investors to discover Lithuania.
